Scholar Wall 2

Wall of Scholarly Distinction

Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are selected based on the Hirsch index, also known as the H-index, which represents the number of research papers a faculty member has published, and the papers’ impact as determined by how many times they have been cited by other scientists and scholars in subsequent research articles.

For example, a researcher with an H-index of 50 has published at least 50 articles that each have been cited at least 50 times. An H-index increases as multiple papers are cited multiple times. The H-index calculations for the Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are based on research abstract and citation data from Scopus. Carver College of Medicine Impact Scholars are faculty who have achieved H-index scores of 100 or higher (“gold” level) and 50 or higher (“silver” level).

A History of Innovation

Our biomedical science programs actively bring innovative technologies, ideas, and procedures to the marketplace. The intellectual property and laboratory discoveries generated by the research enterprise have led to many successful partnerships, both private and public, as well as several venture opportunities and commercial start-ups.

The pursuit of innovation by college researchers continues to meet the needs of the rapidly evolving live science sector, including significant contributions to the fields of diagnostic imaging, drug development and delivery, and genetically inherited diseases. In fact, over the past several decades, the Carver College of Medicine has fostered the launch of dozens of new commercial start-ups—approximately four per year—based on research and/or technology developed by college faculty, staff, and students. Also, the Carver College of Medicine is responsible for 175 active domestic and 304 active foreign patents.

Training Grants

CCOM faculty lead institutional training grants (T32 mechanism), which support predoctoral and/or postdoctoral students.

  • Currently we have 20 T32 training grants with CCOM faculty as Program Directors.
  • Pre- and post-doctoral students win individual training grants (e.g., NSF, F31, F30 for predocs; F32 for postdocs).

The Office of Research

The Office of Research is the administrative unit charged with providing and coordinating resources for College investigators in both clinical and basic research endeavors. Office staff work with researchers to maintain an environment that is robust, innovative and collaborative, communicate internal and external funding opportunities, and assist in grant proposal routing, award administration and transfer agreements.

The UI Carver College of Medicine supports state of the art Core Research Facilities, which receive administrative support through the Office of Research. Additional shared resources and facilities are made available to College researchers through agreements with other University of Iowa and off-campus institutions.

On an annual basis, office staff also study and allocate physical research space for over 250 investigator laboratories and advise on facility projects such as renovations and major research-related building projects.

Collaboration is fostered through the office by coordination of research events and activities including the Distinguished Biomedical Scholars Lecture Series, Distinguished Mentor Award, Health Sciences Research Day as well as various special seminars, workshops and symposia throughout the year.
